Field Visit : Hammarby Sjöstad
A waterfront city renewal project.
The first sketches of what would become Hammarby Sjöstad were drawn in 1990. The idea was to expand the inner city with a focus on the water, and convert a former industrial and harbour zone into a modern urban setting.
This redevelopment required major reconstruction. Traffic barriers were removed and former industrial and terminal areas phased out. The area is linked by a three kilometre long boulevard for traffic and services. Parks, quays and walkways have also been planned around Hammarby Sjö.
Hammarby Sjöstad is located outside of inner-city Stockholm, but the design is intentionally urban. Inner city street dimensions, city blocks, building heights and density are harmonised with water, parks and sunlight.
The unique environment of the natural shoreline along Sickla Udde and Sickla Kanal has a more intimate, small-scale feeling. The developed area gradually fades towards the shoreline, and follows the elevation of the ground toward the avenue’s crest and Sickla Park.
Hammarby Sjöstad is the biggest urban redevelopment project in Stockholm for many years. Hammarby Sjöstad will have around 10,000 apartments and 30,000 people are expected to live and work in the area. Around 10,000 people currently live here, including 7,000 on the southern side of the water expanse. Hammarby Sjöstad is set to be complete by 2015-2017.
