THE STOCKHOLM CONFERENCE WILL BE CARBON OFFSET
CARBON OFFSETTING
Transport, electricity, heating, catering,… like all human activities an international conference such as the 3-day conference in Stockholm bringing together some 400 people from all over the world will directly or indirectly generate greenhouse gas emissions.
Carbon offsetting consists in reducing greenhouse gas emissions somewhere else in the world by an amount equivalent to that generated by the conference to ensure the overall balance is neutral and that the conference is climate neutral.
Like many international organizations, the IACP has decided to offset greenhouse gas emissions generated by the Stockholm conference, i.e. some 1,200 tons of CO2 equivalent according to initial calculations.
WHY THIS INITIATIVE FROM THE IACP?
In June 2007, the members of the IACP approved a "Charter for sustainable development of port cities", arising out of the work carried out in the Sydney conference. Intent on demonstrating their solidarity with and responsibilities to future generations, port cities have thereby confirmed their willingness to pursue their actions in favor of sustainable development in implementing their project.
In this Stockholm conference, its first international conference since the signing of the Charter, the IACP has chosen to give concrete form to the principles adopted in the Charter. By offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the conference, IACP will limit its climatic impact and help protect future generations.
YOUR INPUT TO THIS INITIATIVE
Furthermore, to show solidarity by all for this initiative, a financial contribution of €40, identical for all delegates regardless of their origin, has been included in the conference participation fees.
This contribution will be used to finance projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an amount equivalent to the emissions generated by the conference (e.g. renewable energy production projects or energy efficiency projects in the developing countries). Financing is performed by purchasing carbon credits, a system set up under the Kyoto protocol. For this offsetting, IACP has chosen Climat Mundi, a French service provider specialized in carbon offsetting.
Thank you for helping us protect the climate – Action n° 1
To reduce the conference’s emissions, we would ask you to travel in economy class when travelling by air and to use public transport to go into the city centre and for your other transport needs during the conference.
1Business class seats take up more space on board, a greater quantity of greenhouse gases is generated due to this.
